Episode 040: Forget About Grants to Start a Business. Go for Contracts!

Federal grants to start a business don’t exist. You have a better chance of spotting Big Foot riding a unicorn than you do finding a federal small business start-up grant. Nah. The way to go, if you have a small business, is federal contracting (and eventually state and local government contracting too). The federal government purchases billions of dollars of goods and services every year. Chances are Uncle Sam is buying whatever you’re selling. Getting started with federal contracting is a pain in the neck BUT there are federally-funded resources out there to help you and it won’t cost you anything except time. Once you figure out how to locate contract opportunities and to submit bids, you’ll be off to the races. The key is finding your local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). I think the following website is the most user friendly:

Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers: http://www.aptac-us.org/

If you want to learn about the origins of PTACs, check out the Defense Logistics Agency’s website: http://www.dla.mil/SmallBusiness/PTAP/

I’ll (eventually) post a video on YouTube walking through both sights and pointing out the really important stuff.
